It was a military fort in the first century, created by the Romans which kept the name it had from the times of Alexander the Great – Sirmium. The city became the birth place of several glorious Roman emperors and grew to become the capital of Pannonia. At the end of the third century it became the imperial center and one of the new capitals of the Empire. During the middle ages the city was fought for by the Francs, Slavs, Bulgarians, Byzantines and Hungarians. At the beginning of the fourteenth century the city changed its old name into Civitas Sancti Demetrii, after the great martyr Demetrius who was killed in Sirmium at the beginning of the fourth century. The new name, when translated into old Slavic language and then into Serbian became Mitrovicа. The old name Sirmium was used for the old Slavic word Srem which the region was named after, so the city finally got its present name
Sremskа Mitrovicа.

Visit the official presentation of the city at the following web address: www.sremskamitrovica.rs

Sremskа Mitrovicа is in Serbia, Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, 75km to the west from Belgrade, and lies on the left bank of the Sava River.
